(IRN)-An auction for the Thomson prison is scheduled for Dec. 21, but state’s largest employees union wants it scrapped.
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is asking Governor Pat Quinn and the Illinois Department of Corrections to put a halt to the auction, which was scheduled after the federal government stalled it’s plan to purchase the prison for the housing of prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. That sale was purported to have been for $237 million.
“It just doesn’t make sense,” said AFSCME spokesman Anders Lindall. He says the state prisons are at 148 percent capacity, especially since 3,000 more prisoners are in the system now than when Thomson was built to help relieve overcrowding.
The corrections agency did not return requests for a response.
