A man who was imprisoned for more than 18 years before being exonerated has filed suit against the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
Fernando Bermudez, seen above, was freed last year, after a judge overturned a 1992 murder conviction, citing police negligence and witness coercion.
His suit claims widespread misconduct and gross negligence within the district attorney’s office that led to his wrongful conviction.
Bermudez was convicted of killing a man outside a Greenwich Village nightclub in 1991.
Five trial witnesses later recanted their testimony, setting off a flurry of appeals.
The district attorney’s office has not commented on the suit.
There is no word yet on how much money Bermudez is suing for.
