IDOC Seriously Overcrowded

Illinois prison population surges to record high

Backlash over Quinn’s early-release program plays role

Here is the Chicago Tribune confirming what prison experts have been saying all year long: there are too many people imprisoned in IL; the State cannot afford to pay for this, and the tensions and situation is getting out of hand. Regardless of the public rhetoric, the state legislators and Governor Quinn are going to have to act soon to do something to reduce the number of IDOC inmates. Either non-violent offenders will have to be released, or the number of individuals sent to prison has to go down.

“…The state’s prison system is bursting at the seams with a record high of nearly 49,000 inmates, some 3,000 more than just a year ago. The surge, combined with the state’s multi-billion-dollar budget crisis, has led to conditions that watchdog groups and veteran correctional officers say they haven’t seen since a population crisis in the 1980s prompted the state to build three new prisons…”

“…With the Illinois Department of Corrections about $95 million behind on its bills, many prison vendors haven’t been paid for months. In some cases, fed-up contractors have stopped extending credit to prisons, causing shortages that have led wardens to barter among themselves to stay stocked with essential items like paper goods and soap…”

“…Three years ago, thinking that the number of inmates statewide would stabilize or even fall, prison officials in Illinois considered closing Vandalia Correctional Center to cut costs. But in just the last year, the population at the downstate minimum-security prison nearly doubled, rising to 1,700 this fall from 950 last November. Now, nearly 100 inmates sleep dormitory-style in a basement area previously closed off by prison officials, said Russ Stunkel, president of the union representing staff at Vandalia. The bunks are only about 2 feet apart — rear end to elbow, as he put it…”

“We’re beyond our capacity, and I don’t think we can handle any more,” Stunkel said.

I REALLY HOPE THAT THE NON VIOLENT OFFENDERS ARE GOING TO BE RELEASED AND LIKE SOON. IT WASN’T EVEN A POINT OF STOPPING THIS PROGRAM. JUST BECAUSE RANDLE SCREWED UP THAT DO NOT MEAN SUSPEND THIS PROGRAM. THESE PEOPLE WANT TO BE WITH THEIR FAMILY LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND ESPECIALLY FOR THE HOLIDAYS. MY HUSBAND WAS SUPPOSE TO BE RELEASED YESTERDAY AND I HAVEN’T GOT A FULL 5 HOURS OF SLEEP SINCE HE’S BEEN GONE, WHICH IS A YEAR. THEY HAVE BEEN LOOKING INTO THIS EARLY RELEASE PROGRAM FOR A WHILE NOW, JUST LET THESE PEOPLE GO, THIS PROGRAM HAVE BEEN GOING ON LONG BEFORE QUINN BECAME GOVERNOR. ITS ASHAME HOW ONLY ONE PERSON CAN MESS THINGS UP FOR THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE!! I WORK FULL TIME, HAVE TWO CHILDREN HERE AT HOME I EVEN LOST A CHILD BECAUSE OF MY STRESS, AND I WANT TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL TO FINISH MY NURSING DEGREE BUT I CAN’T WITHOUT MY HUSBAND HERE WITH OUR KIDS. I HOPE THIS PROGRAM STARTS BACK UP REAL SOON!!! I WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR ALL OF US THAT ARE OUT HERE HURTING FROM THIS NONSENSE!!

WELL, ITS THANKSGIVING N I CAN’T REALLY ENJOY IT WITH THE REST OF MY FAMILY BECAUSE ALL I THINK ABOUT IS MY HUSBAND. IF THE GOOD TIME WAS BACK HE WOULD’VE GOT OUT THIS PAST MONDAY. I KEEP READING ABOUT HOW PEOPLE HEARD THAT ITS COMING BACK DEC 15TH AND THEN SOME SAY JAN 15TH SO I CAME TO THE CONCULSION THAT NOBODY REALLY KNOWS WHATS GOING ON. IF THE IDOC IS REALLY THAT CROWDED, WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG FOR THEM TO START THE GOOD TIME BACK UP, DO SOMETHING BAD HAVE TO HAPPEN IN THERE FIRST. MOST OF THE INMATES THAT ARE REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT IT ARE IN PRISON FOR PETTY CRIMES SO WHY CAN’T THEY BE RELEASED. ITS ONLY 3-6 MONTHS TAKEN OFF THEIR SENTENCE. I HAD A DEAM THAT THE IDOC CALLED ME N TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE GOING TO BE RELEASING MY HUSBAND IN 14 DAYS BUT UNFORTUNATELY THAT DREAM WAS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE! WHEN ARE THESE PEOPLE GOING TO QUIT HURTING ALL OF US AND START RELEASING OUR LOVE ONES!!!

JUST LEFT FROM SEEING MY HUSBAND AT THE PRISON IN VANDALIA. I HATE GOING TO THAT PLACE AND MOST OF ALL I HATE LEAVING MY HUSBAND THERE. I CAN’T WAIT FOR HIM TO COME HOME. HE SAID HE IS HEARING THAT THE EARLY RELEASE IS SUPPOSE TO START BACK IN JANUARY, I TOLD HIM ITS THE SAME STUFF I’M HEARING. I ALSO TOLD HIM REGARDLESS OF IF ITS COMING BACK OR NOT HIS OUT DATE IS IN MAY BUT IF THE GOOD TIME COME HE WILL BE ONE OF THE PEOPLE THAT COMES HOME IMMEDIATELY. I REALLY WISH THE GOVERNOR GET ON HIS J.O.B BECAUSE I THINK THE REASON WHY HE WON THE ELECTION IS BECAUSE ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE LOVE ONES IN IDOC. I WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR ALL OF US.
