I enjoyed this article. Especially, the final comment, "they would, in short, do their jobs thoroughly and well, knowing that innocent people were depending on them, every step of the way."

I wonder if reporters and journalist think of themselves in these terms? That their job is to "protect the innocent." As I've followed this story, the Rockford Register-Star has been all about selling the papers and hyping the reader with projecting an image that says that the Register-Star is all about "fighting crime" in Rockford. The Register-Star is only interested in pointing the finger at the person the police are holding responsible (whether charged or not), and not examining the paucity of information the police provide for any facts for that belief or assessing the true progress of the police investigation into the Clark murder and whether or not the police are just "spinning" their wheels. Police spokespersons demand that we trust them. Claim that they have witnesses, claim they have evidence, claim that they have the right person. But, there have been no charges now after more than a years time.

To mark that anniversary, the Regster-Star ran a small article rehashing the meager amoutn that is known. Which seems to be very little and amounts to all involved claiming "we are working very hard. We'll let you know".

Meanwhile, where is the responsibility of the press? After a year of printing that the polce have witnesses, evidence and so forth, but no charges, where are the questions? I seem to recall a Register-Star editorial claiming that the public had the right to know the names of all the participants in the illegal poker game that the police broke up on Kishwaukee St on Oct 20, 2007, which resulted in the death of one individual. Since it was rumored there were mob connections to the Rockford incident and prominent community individuals involved, the Register-Star promised to keep us advised as to who was there. What happens? That case is well past prep time and the Register-Star (after a little criticism) has apparently forgotten it's promise to it's readers. And, whatever happened to the contempt of court prosecution of Geannette Wittendorf, the prosecutor from the Winnebago County State's Attorney's office? It is rare that a prosecutor is cited by a judge for inappropriate actions taken in court. This is a headline story, but where is it reported? How are we, the public, to know what really is transpiring on the Clark case if the police have to answer to no one? Are gaps in law enforcement being plugged with the "usual suspects". Have the police got it all wrong? Is this why we keep hearing that everyone tasered around here dies because they are "just druggies"? Is the Rockford Register-Star and our local press aiding the police in ruining the lives of innocent individuals? How are we to know unless the press starts asking some hard questions?

it is encouraging to see what effective journalism can accomplish - like the effort in Chicago by investigative reporters. Too bad this is completely absent in Rockford. The Rock-River Times may claim to serve this function, but they've failed to do any investigation of Richard's case; so how do their claims of ethical superiority to the Register-Star stand up? You'd think 180 days of jail without being charged would perk up someone's ears around here.

Richard reports to friends that the prosecution is presently in the "jailhouse snitch" stage; trying every which way possible to find someone in prison willing to claim that in some way Richard has "confessed" to them. He knows they interrogated one inmate who he worked a bit with and tried to get him to report that Richard said something incriminating (the inmate told them to go to heck and later reported the attempt to his attorney). Richard also reports a guy he did not know coming up to him and persistently holding out his hand for Richard to shake until Richard did, only to then exclaim loudly for the benefit of those around to hear, "Good job, killing your attorney!" And there is the cellmate of Richard's who he bunked with awhile and who was later transferred to another facility. Richard was told by others after he left that the cellmate was known to have reported on other inmates. Bet that guy went to a better facility!
